What can cause a vauxhall engine to be sluggish going uphill and when first starting but on the flat its ok?

Its a vectra petrol 2003 although it has a new engine fitted 3 years ago this has done approx 40K miles could it be something as simple as a change of oil and air filter or could it be more sinister, especially as it was running ok before the big freeze|||Needs a full service with plugs, oil and all filters changed. Valve clearances and ignition timing and spark strength should be measured. Compression test and head gasket checked out.|||You mean before the big freeze,or before it got this god dam cold?makes a difference because I think you have a faulty coolant temperature sensor, but,as it's really cold,it might be the air manifold intake temperature sensor.Either of which has to be garage tested, neither of parts is that expensive.and probably an hours labour for the job.hope that helps.|||changing the oil %26amp; filter will not help. you do not say is it auto /manual first off i would change the fuel filter , then find a mechanic to give it a road test as there are many reasons for it. auto trans? check the fluid level|||it could be anything really, maybe get service on engine, plugs or coils breaking down maybe, but from your description it could even be a slipping clutch !
